Soulmates! Or Soulmates?

Writer's picture: Editorial BoardEditorial Board

The very famous king of romance, Mr Shah Rukh Khan, in his movie Om Shanti Om  said, Agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho, toh puri kaynaath usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai

Let’s look at the math of this statement.

There are seven billion people in the world and one soul mate out there, somewhere, right? Maybe, maybe not.

The odds are next to impossible. Factually speaking, the chances of lightning striking you 3 times is less than one in a 7 billion.

Research has quite clearly shown that a strong belief in destiny can actually be harmful to you and the success of your relationships. Here's why: having the mentality of believing that you've found your soulmate is related to all kinds of unhealthy thinking about your love life. It says that people who hold strong beliefs in destiny are prone to lose interest in their partner much faster than others and are likely to give up much more easily when the relationship looks a bit less rosy.

In other words: how will you react when your soul mate starts looking a little less perfect? Life is neither a Yash Chopra movie with a Switzerland dream sequence, nor is it a Nicholas Sparks book! There isn’t a happily ever after. Things don’t end with sunsets and the chirping of birds!

Nowadays, there are relationships with no individuality, with no life beyond that relationship; this is when heartbreaks become bigger than they actually are. Irrespective of how much you love someone, there is a need for balance. The whole concept of ‘2 Jism ek Jaan’ is flawed
