Learning to Let go

It sucks when it’s 2 in the morning and you are lying on your bed with your eyes wide open. No, I am not talking about a ghost encounter, I wish I were though! But it is about the umpteen times your mind goes out of control and thinks more than what it is supposed to.

Haunted stories are so much easier to cope with than the devil that literally lives inside you! You can’t shut him, neither can you pause nor can you fast forward. It becomes worse when sleep decides to disown you.

Overthinking is not as insignificant as it sounds. It is a big deal for all those self-proclaimed insomniacs. It starts from- why did this happen? And goes on and on.

The science of well being has forgotten that the world is an uncertain and complex place with people who are not always the nicest. Words cut deeper than a knife, but when you sit and ponder over them, the wound becomes so much deeper.

This means you are giving your mind more control than it deserves. This is when you build a world inside your own head and feel like everything is falling apart when it actually isn’t. The fear/anticipation/excitement/nervousness is sometimes too much to handle. Don’t let your brain create its own virtual world. Don’t let your mind be so free that your peace becomes a slave to it.

Why do you have to make a small change so difficult? Why do you have to bring back the things that didn’t go right in the first place? Why do you have to tell yourself that you are not good enough for something? Why do you have to make things worse than they actually are? Thinking about everything from how you look to how you dress, from how you talk till how you walk, how you’ll fumble or how you’ll fall. You don’t realize when you go from making a general opinion your own to making your opinion general. You don’t need people’s approval to be called good; their opinion about you does not define you. The world does not revolve around you

I am not saying don’t analyse yourself, but don’t be so hard on yourself that it becomes difficult for you to look at yourself in the mirror. If you practice self-criticism make sure you practice self-appreciation as well. Give yourself a pat on the back for every courageous thing you do. Be it a simple class presentation or be it a race you ran.

All you need to do is learn to let go and instead of feeding thoughts to your mind, feed your soul. Just don’t give your mind the power to leave you emotionally hurt and mentally broke. Worrying about how things might go wrong won’t help things go right. Learn to accept your flaws and embrace them. Things aren’t always supposed to go as planned and honestly speaking they never go as planned. So accept it. You are not perfect. Nobody is.
